Reading as an academic

on
2021-12-17

Recently I stumbled upon an article by Astrid Schmölzer (@AstridSchmolzer) about “Academic reading and the curse of staying on top of literature”. This article made me think about how much I should read and if what I already do is enough. Reading as an academic can be challenging, considering…

Review: Baalbek Reborn: Temples

on
2021-12-10

The “virtual tourism company” Flyover Zone published a (for now) free VR application called Baalbek Reborn: Temples. As a Near Eastern archaeologist and VR enthusiast, I naturally had to try it out. I did and have to say, that although it looks quiet nice, I am underwhelmed. Let’s try…

The out-of-placeness of dirt

on
2021-12-03
Recently I read a book about dirt. Not the kind of dirt that I as an archaeologist have to deal with, but more the philosophical kind. Mary Douglas describes in her book "Purity and Danger: An Analysis of Concepts of Pollution and Taboo" how what is considered to be unclean is culturally dependent. The whole book is interesting in itself, but I am concerned with the cleanliness of 3D reconstructions and how unclean they actually need to be.

on
2021-11-26

Since 2018, I am building what is called a RTI Dome. Well it is more of a family business to be honest and my retired father is doing most of the work, but we started building two domes for fun and have now sold another one. The building is…

What is a history game?

on
2021-11-19

So recently, I started to think about videogames depicting the past. Well not only depicting the past, but are also past-related… That sounds already difficult, but what is the difference between a historicist game and a historicising game? Does a game like Tomb Raider fit into one of these…

Book Review: The Culture Code by D. Coyle

on
2021-10-29

In my quest to find good productivity books, I came across The Culture Code by Daniel Coyle. The author describes some of the most successful organisations and how these cultivate productive skills: Pixar, sport teams and even the Navy’s SEAL team being under investigation. Coyle identified three key skills…

What to expect from the Uncharted movie

on
2021-10-22

On February 18, 2022 a new movie will hit the theatres. It is called Uncharted and based on a videogame about a treasure hunter named Nathan Drake, played by Tom Holland. At first sight, Tom Holland seems a bit young to play Nathan Drake, except that the movie is…

Tray System: Now, Later, Doesn’t matter and Done

on
2021-10-15

So how do you organise your inbox? Where do you put things you need to do? For a long time, I just put everything on my table. After that, I organised everything in piles and at some point, I bought myself a tray organiser. Hot stuff right? Nevertheless, after…
