In this third instalment of published archaeogames, I present the work of my students from the academic year 2024. I have already written about the games of 2022 and 2023. This semester, my students have produced four video games that deal with archaeology in one way or another. All games are free and in either English or German. Have fun playing!

Ancient Diner

In this cooking simulator we are the chef of an ancient restaurant. Our distinguished guests are either Julius Caesar (level 1) or Julius Caesar and Cleopatra (level 2). The game is based on real ancient recipes and our task is to mix the order correctly and in time. The group planned to include more levels, but due to time constraints were unable to do so.

Shovels & Shenanigans

Graphically styled screenshot from a video game in which we see a worker behind a desk handling a stamp. He says "Do yourself a favor and go back to primary school, because clearly, you've got a lot to learn".

In this game we play an archaeologist in need of funding to excavate the Heuneburg. First of all, we have to apply for funding, which we will only get if we apply wisely. Then we have to carry out the excavation with the help of some mini-games. They are not easy, but they are manageable. After three days of excavation, the game ends because the time has run out at the end of the semester.

Echoes from Earth

In this twist, we play an alien sent to Earth to investigate. Humans are long gone, so we have to analyse not only the Roman and Medieval remains, but also the modern times! We find artefacts like an old Nokia phone, but also finds from other eras. Oh, I forgot: the game takes place in Cologne, Germany.

Choga Zanbil: A researcher’s tale

A 3D rendering of a Mesopotamian ziggurat in the desert.
Screenshot from the game “Choga Zanbil: A researcher’s tale” in which we solve riddles to get into the ziggurat.

In this game, we want to get inside the Ziggurat. In order to do this, we will be challenged with various tasks and puzzles in order to gain access to the inner part of the Ziggurat. These challenges are designed to lead the player to find artefacts associated with Chogha Zanbil or uncover new knowledge. The game depicts the ancient complex of Chogha Zanbil, located south-east of Susa in present-day south-west Iran.

Where to find the games?

Fear not, finding the games is quite easy, just follow me.
