2024-10-11

In this third instalment of published Archaeogames, I present the works of my students of the academic year 2024. I already wrote about the games of 2022 and 2023. This semester, my students produced four video games concerned with archaeology in one or the other way. All games are free and either in German or English. Enjoy!

Ancient Diner

Pixel graphic from a video game called "Ancient Diner".- We see Julius Caesar waiting for his order and in front of us a desk with cooking utensils.

In this cooking simulator we play the cook of an ancient restaurant. Our distinguished guests are composed of either Julius Caesar (level 1) or Julius Caesar and Cleopatra (level 2). The game relies on actual ancient recipes and our task is to mix the order correctly and in time. The group planned to incorporate more levels, but due to time restrictions was not able to.

Shovels & Shenanigans

Graphically styled screenshot from a video game in which we see a worker behind a desk handling a stamp. He says "Do yourself a favor and go back to primary school, because clearly, you've got a lot to learn".

In this game we play an archaeologist in need for an excavation of the Heuneburg. We first apply for funding and will only get it when applying senseful. We then need to do the excavation with the help of some minigames. These are not easy, but manageable. After excavating three days, the game ends as the time at the end of the semester did run out.

Echoes from Earth

Pixel graphic from a game where we see a green alien in front of his spaceship.

In this twist, we play an alien sent to Earth to investigate. Humans have long gone, so we need to analyse not only the Roman and Medieval remains, but modern times too! We find artefacts like an old Nokia phone, but also finds from other periods. Oh, I forgot: the game is set in Cologne, Germany.

Choga Zanbil: A researcher’s tale

A 3D rendering of a Mesopotamian ziggurat in the desert.
Screenshot from the game “Choga Zanbil: A researcher’s tale” in which we solve riddles to get into the ziggurat.

In this game we want to get into the ziggurat. In order to do so, we are challenged with different tasks and riddles in order to get access to the inner part of the ziggurat. These challenges are designed to lead the player to find artifacts associated with Chogha Zanbil or uncover new knowledge. The game depicts the ancient complex of Chogha Zanbil, which lies to the south-east of Susa in what is now south-west Iran.

Where to find the games?

Fear not, finding the games is rather easy, please just follow me.
