Upcoming conferences and workshops

2024-10-18

As you might know, I am a friend of conferences and workshops. It is not only about travelling around, but also about meeting friends and building networks. To constantly go to conferences and workshops, one has to constantly plan ahead. Today I want to tell you about my plans for 2025. So far, I already know that I will be going to three events at least.

CAA 2025 in Athens

Between the 5-9 May the international conference on Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology (CAA) takes place at the University of West Attica, Athens, Greece. This conference takes place every year, but as last year’s event took place in Auckland, I couldn’t participate. This year however is feasible, and I am not only visiting, but also co-organising a session at the conference.

Together with Aris Politopoulos (Leiden University), Angus Mol (Leiden University) and Despoina Sampatakou (University of Glasgow) I will organise a session called “Is It All Fun and Games?: The Value(s) of Archaeogaming and other Forms of Play in Digital Heritage and Archaeology”. We already had an archaeogaming session two years ago in Amsterdam and it was quite successful! We expect many presentations about the topic and hope we can publish the talks afterwards again.

14th ICAANE 2025 in Lyon

Between the 2-7 June the International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East (ICAANE) takes place at the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée in Lyon, France. The ICAANE is a conference on the archaeology of West Asia and naturally, I will be there to talk about my work in this area. I am still thinking, but I plan to present my progress on my online viewer of the Ashurbanipal relief I currently researching. I think the topic will be quite fitting and interesting.

Maybe I even go for a second presentation, but I am not sure right now. In any case, the ICAANE is the place where I know the most people. It is always a delight to meet old friends and colleagues, as nearly everyone from the area of West Asian archaeology will be there. The last conference was in Copenhagen, where I also was pretty active in organising a workshop within the conference.

Workshop on Paradata in Leiden

Between the 15-19 September, I was invited to a special topic workshop in Leiden. It will be a closed workshop about paradata with a special focus on 3D data, but I am really looking forward to it. I not only have friends in Leiden, but also like the city very much. Spending a week there while discussing interesting topics sounds like a win to me.

2nd DiKopA workshop in Darmstadt

Finally, our DikopA project will organise a second workshop in 2025. We do not have a specific date yet, but I expect it to be very late in the year. This years workshop was very successful and made a lot of fun. I sincerely hope next years workshop will be the same. I am also currently organising something around archaeogaming for some students and really hope that participating students of that event will also participate in our second workshop, but we will see. I will report in time!
