A New Milestone: Digital Methods in Archaeological Teaching

I’m excited to share the launch of a new edited volume: Digitale Methoden des Lernens und Lehrens in der Archäologie: Chancen und Herausforderungen, edited by Marion Bolder‑Boos, Sebastian Hageneuer, and Georg Pantelidis. Published by Propylaeum in August 2025, this Open Access book collects insights from a June 2024 workshop at TU Darmstadt. It offers innovative perspectives on how digital teaching methods are reshaping archaeological education.

From Workshop to Volume: Bridging Theory and Practice

This volume grew out of a lively June 2024 workshop organized by the network “Digitale Kompetenzen in der Archäologie” at TU Darmstadt. Academics and educators came together to present best practices in digital teaching. From immersive VR to serious games in museum contexts—participatns discussed the promises and pitfalls of tech in heritage education.

The editors—Dr. Marion Bolder‑Boos (Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz), Dr. Sebastian Hageneuer (Berlin‑Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities), and Dr. des. Georg Pantelidis (TU Darmstadt)—have curated these contributions into a volume. It reflects on digital innovation and guides future teaching strategies.

Content Highlights: Tools, Ethics, and Archaeogaming

The book spans rich and varied terrain: Martina Trognitz writes on data literacy and management. Asuman Lätzer‑Lasar explores the ethical dimensions of immersive teaching. Michaela Stark delves into serious games in museums and others contribute perspectives on browser-based virtual reality, archaeogaming, text and code interactivity, and Linux-friendly teaching tools.

The collection strikes a balance between theoretical grounding and hands-on application. Each chapter offers both conceptual insights and concrete classroom or public-context practices. Taken together, they chart a path for archaeology education that’s collaborative, critical, and digital-first.

Open Access Wins: Visibility and Impact

Published via Propylaeum’s e‑Publishing platform and released under a Creative Commons Attribution‑NoDerivatives 4.0 license, this volume is immediately accessible to researchers, educators, and students worldwide—free of charge and with guaranteed long‑term availability via DOI, ISBN, and metadata standards.

This aligns with broader Open Access and digital-publication strategies, such as those championed by Heidelberg University Publishing, which emphasize cross-media workflows, XML-based formats, and persistent availability. The outcome: a publication that not only shares knowledge but embodies the digital pedagogy it discusses.
